Does Anyone Watch Hoarders?
Packing for a big move is like being trapped in an episode of Hoarders. With every item you pack, you know you should throw it out, but you can’t help but think, “I might need this later.” The psychiatrist in the back of your head tells you that you’re exhibiting hoarding tendencies, but you tell him/her to leave you alone because, in two years, for sure, you’re going to need that external CD-R burner that is compatible with your broken IBM thinkpad (two computers ago) that ran Windows 2000. If you’re not familiar with Hoarders, you can share my fear of hoarding by watching this brief clip:
This fear was made even more real to me when after the movers left, we checked into the hotel and I began to unpack my luggage. I mean,…wow:
Really? I needed to pack all of these bottles? I guess at the time, each near-empty bottle seemed critically important, but as a mass, sitting on the hotel floor, it looked a lot like trash. I can’t wait to see the “trash” we decided to store when we return in two years.
So, the big move is finally over as of yesterday. Our last week on CONUS (foreign service speak for continental United States) will be spent at Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria. Rutledge, our dog, is traveling with us to Tanzania so he’s at the hotel enjoying their very liberal pet policy.
Seven days to go!
